Bishops and Brookes: The Anglican Mission and the Brooke Raj in Sarawak, 1848-1941

Front Cover
Oxford University Press, 1992 - History - 290 pages
This book examines the relations between the Anglican Mission and the White Rajahs of Sarawak, focusing on the interaction between Bishop Francis McDougall and James Brooke. The Mission is shown to have influenced events during the first Rajah's reign in a way not hitherto recognized by historians of this period. This thoroughly researched study, based on a wide variety of sources, including hitherto unpublished letters, fills many of the existing gaps and is an important addition to scholarly knowledge of Sarawak under the White Rajahs and British missionary activity there.
