Tara-India Research Press, 2005 - Biography & Autobiography - 270 pages
Pioneer New Zealand mountaineer, explorer, surgeon, photographer and conservationist Teichelmann, after emigrating from Australia in 1897, devoted his life to the health of the disperse community living on New Zealand's remote west coast. Between times he sought solace in the mountains at his doorstep, sensitively capturing their moods on his large plate camera. He explored the Southern Alps extensively and completed many first ascents with other well-known climbers of his era, among them the Graham brothers, Tom Fyfe and Malcolm Ross. Throughout his life, Teichelmann was passionately involved in establishing support for the conservation of wild country both to protect its intrinsic value and for the benefit, use and enjoyment of those who need such places for inspiration, solitude and escape. Bob McKerrow's biography, richly illustrated with Teichelmann's own photographs, is a tribute to a remarkable man.
