It is a common observation that the extroverted Southern types (Italians, Spaniards, people in the South of France etc.) accompany their words with a livelier play of dynamic features and gesticulations than the more introverted...
Page 23 - This causes difficulty in synchronization chiefly because the target text between two pauses is either longer or shorter than the original even if the translation is otherwise faithful. If it happens to be shorter the remedy lies nearer at hand, because empty padding words can be added to fill the gaps (eg well, as a matter of fact, I think, I mean, you know, of course). The reverse situation is less easy to overcome since it may be hard indeed to condense a longer text without falsifying its content....
Page 18 - The translator must ask him- or herself constantly, what message was the speaker trying to convey by means of this utterance, and how can his intention be expressed in the target language? In other words, in tackling colloquial dialogue the translator must evince particular sensitivity to the illocutionary aspect, transferring the speech act of the speaker into the target language. Needless to say that in order to achieve this he must be well acquainted with the social and cultural ethos of the native...

But it is common knowledge that the various emotions have different outward manifestations with different peoples and nationalities: the news of somebody's death is received or reacted to in different ways by a Frenchman, an Italian, an Englishman or a Russian etc. even when their personalities are held roughly the same. In this respect psychological research could be of good...
