Abstract: The overall purpose of the book is to integrate and synthesize key research efforts, theories, and applications in the area of work motivation into a single volume. The book presents a wide array of contemporary theories of motivation as well as ways they have been supported by research and practice. The link between motivation issues and other organizational functions is also exploed. The book is organized into four parts with Part I devoted to building a framework for understanding basic fundamentals of motivation theory as well as a reviw of historical approaches to the study of motivation. Part II introduces a number of contemporary theories and related research in the area of motivation. The authors sequentially introduce need theories of motivation, cognitive theories of motivation, and reinforcement theories of motivation, followed by a discussion of the applications of the cognitive and reinforcement theories.
