Greatness Close to HomeThe latest issue of Offramp, a journal produced by the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), is a thought-provoking collection of essays, projects, and interviews that highlights work by faculty, students, and recent graduates. Although a number of the essays are based on the theme of the urban form of Los Angeles, the topics addressed also include a critique of current architectural practice, an interview with artist Mike Kelley, and an investigation of the trailer park. A graphic feast designed by graduate students at the California Institute of the Arts, under the direction of Lorraine Wild, Offramp 6 contains contributions by Mike Kelley, a prominent Los Angeles artist; Margaret Crawford, chair of SCI-Arc's history and theory department and author of Building the Workingman's Paradise; John Chase, Chase and Burnett Architects; Mike Ferguson, member of Hedge Design Collective; Roger Sherman, a Santa Monica architect; and Dave Hickey, art critic for Art Issues and professor at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. |
