Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Patients with Nicotine Dependence

Front Cover
American Psychiatric Association, 1996 - Medical - 64 pages
Developed by clinical, research, and academic psychiatrists and extensively reviewed by APA member psychiatrists and other experts, this sixth official APA practice guideline provides clinicians with the best and most appropriate treatment strategies for patients with nicotine dependence. It also identifies those areas where research should improve clinical decision making and eliminate gaps in our knowledge. Although the focus is on adults, it also discusses modifications for treating adolescents. With the rising concerns about balancing quality and access to care with costs, this practice guideline will help those charged with overseeing the utilization and reimbursement of psychiatric services to develop more scientifically based and clinically sensitive criteria.

This practice guideline focuses on the three groups of smokers likely to be seen by psychiatrists: smokers who are being treated for a psychiatric disorder other than nicotine dependence or withdrawal, smokers who have failed initial treatments for smoking cessation and need more intensive treatment, and psychiatric inpatients. The recommendations in this guideline generally apply to all smokers even though not all smokers meet DSM-IV criteria for nicotine dependence because most of the principles for treating nicotine dependence apply to non-nicotine-dependent smokers as well.
