About the author (2001)

John Calder was born in Montreal, Canada on January 25, 1927. He worked in the family timber business before founding Calder Publications in London in 1949. He was friends with Samuel Beckett and wrote several books about the Nobel Prize-winning Irish writer. In 1966, Calder was convicted of obscenity for publishing Hubert Selby's novel Last Exit to Brooklyn. The conviction was overturned on appeal, in a landmark free-speech case. He died on August 13, 2018 at the age of 91.
