Page 3 - Soviets with their large rocket engines, which gives them many months of lead-time, and recognizing the likelihood that they will exploit this lead for some time to come in still more impressive successes, we nevertheless are required to make new efforts on our own. For while we cannot guarantee that we shall one day be first, we can guarantee that any failure to make this effort will make us last.
Page 36 - Characteristics of the vehicle on various types of guideway with artificially introduced irregularities - High speed running characteristics of a single vehicle (maximum speed 402 km/h) Meanwhile, improvements to the equipment for power supply have been planned for carrying out running tests in the high speed range with coupled vehicles and completion of the equipment is expected in fiscal 1986. In additon to this, a prototype single vehicle resembling a commercial-use vehicle will be manufactured...
Page 62 - Thank you very much for the opportunity to speak to you today. Senator MOYNIHAN.
Page 20 - This vehicle would be initially accelerated to 250 km/h by linear motors alone. Rockets would then be fired to assist the linear motors in accelerating to 500 km/h. During this time, vehicle systems would be checked, and if no problems were found and everything was OK, the locks would be released and the space vehicle would take off at 500 km/h. If any problem was found during the checks...
Page 40 - Fig. 5 is the aluminum coil, molded with epoxy, for 20 kV use and it was designed to meet a long train. At the Miyazaki Test Center, we have conducted running tests of Maglev vehicles for 8 years. There has been no damage to the ground coil because of noncontact operation, so we think that replacement of the ground coil is not often necessary. Burying the coil in the concrete has an advantage for walking on the guideway, because the surface of the guideway is flat.
Page 18 - As proposed by Dr. Salter, the Planetran would travel from New York to Los Angeles in only 21 minutes, but the version discussed in this article would however take 54 minutes. A superconducting magnetic levitation and linear synchronous motor propulsion vehicle travelling through a vacuum tube, the super subway train could travel at a maximum speed of 9600 km/h, a speed which is no longer so far from reality. At a time when concerns about environmental and atmospheric pollution are rising, it is...
Page 14 - B 50.4m:constant displacement 50.4m:constant displacement Fig. 7 Guideway coil irregularities In February 1987, two linked MLU001 cars carrying myself and two others recorded a record maximum speed of 400.8 km/h. In manned tests, the train was stopped within 6 km to provide an extra margin of safety. This means that a maximum speed of AOO km/h could not have been reached with acceleration and deceleration of less than 0.4 g.
Page 42 - Since the beginning of the development, we have aimed at establishing a simple system and could achieve this overall. In the future, we also intend to go on with development in the same way. In Japan, at present, studies for Maglev system introduction have begun in Hokkaido, Saitama, Niigata, Yamanashi and elsewhere.
Page 40 - ... their wheels in contact with the turnout tracks only at stations where the vehicles should always stop, these turnouts can be simple, like ones for people-mover with rubber tires. The ground coils as applied on the Miyazaki test track at present will be enough for a train unit with 5 or 6 vehicles. In addition, for turnouts necessary for long distance operation of long trains, we are conducting partial trial production and tests of a traverser system; on the straight side, trains can pass levitating...
