I would recommend this book to any who likes adventure with an evil twist to it. Personally I would recommend it, if you like to read complex, yet compelling stories. This novella can be a bit difficult to read, but once you understand it, the “Heart of Darkness” does not only give you something to read, but can also tell you about the darkness a human being can have within their heart and soul. This book takes first takes place in Africa on the Congo River where Conrad’s alter ego, who is with Marlow (main character) when he tells his tale of his journey into the jungle. It then switches to Marlow where he then describes, detail for detail, and his adventure/journey into the Jungle. Although it has some vocabulary that someone in this day and age wouldn’t regularly use, but it puts an image in your mind that can really give you a sense of what Conrad is trying to say. He also uses a specific set of words to describe a certain object or person in the story. Joseph Conrad’s creativity really makes this book the way it is. Without it, it would just be a boring story about a man who went to Africa because he was forced to and ordered to bring back another who is not doing his job. But the details, the imagery, foreshadowing, he puts in it, makes it that more interesting to read and wanting more from it.
Some people may argue that Conrad’s book is contradicting or even racist but the truth of the matter is that Joseph Conrad’s purpose of writing this book is, in my opinion, to reveal that darkness is in every human being on this earth. It can be from one of the most inspirational people to the shyest, withdrawn person on the face of this planet. Darkness is everywhere and in everyone, but those who have the will power not to reveal it, are the people who will be respected in one way or another. Then those who decide to show it, for example Adolf Hitler, will be long remembered for the damage and evil he caused instead of the good he did for the people of Germany. Although Conrad shows that the supposed antagonist is trying to demonstrate his actions are for a good cause, yet they are in a cruel and unusual manner. In that he shows that someone that had no history of wrong can have darkness inside.
In reading “The Heart of Darkness”, you can get bored very easily. So it will take a few times to read and fully understand the lesson or purpose Joseph Conrad is trying to get out. This book is for higher level readers, and even for the higher level readers, it will a take a while or even a website to comprehend the meaning of each sentence and word. But once you can understand and comprehend the book, it will have an effect on you as a person. This novella can change the way you think and act around other people because now you know that anyone is capable of committing anything that can comes to the human brain. Humans are capable of doing extraordinary things. There only limit is the capacity the mind can withhold. This is the other thing the author is trying say with this book. A person can only do as much as the brain could let them do.
Heart of Darkness is a great book to read. If you can’t read the book or don’t understand it, then watching the movie “Apocalypse now” would be an alternative. It is based on the book “Heart of Darkness.” Again I would recommend reading this book, if not watch the movie.

I would recommend this book to those readers who like The Great Gatsby or The Catcher in the Rye. Personally, I wouldn't choose this book as a personal reading, but it is a fairly good book for a class in school. I read it for AP English Language and Composition and it was pretty good, albeit slow paced. Anyway, if you want to read it I don't recommend just diving in. You should definitely do a little research first, simply because of it's complexity. If you have the time, it is definitely in my personal category of being relatively difficult to read, but it should still be read to "advance yourself as a person" or something.... Yea, anyway, you should read it or forever be a lesser person. :) It's only for the dedicated and advanced readers.
