About the author (1976)

An Austrian playwright and novelist, Handke was born in Carinthia. In both his plays and novels, Handke protests against established literary conventions and experiments with new forms: his first production, Offending the Audience, had neither characters nor plot. His novels of the 1970s are largely autobiographical. Handke was awarded the Buchner Prize in 1973 and in 1979 refused to accept the Kafka Prize. A graduate of the University of Graz, he has lived in West Berlin, Paris and Salzburg.
