I was introduced to this book while actually doing time. Though I come from an Roman Catholic background and have more of an Eastern Orthodox spirituality this work helped me to cope with the stresses and shame of my situation without demanding I forfeit my Catholic spirituality. The work features quotes from diverse sources of wisdom. Unless one drills down into the fine points of dogma, the message is compatible with Christian monastic spirituality. I have been outside the (physical) walls of my confinement for almost ten years now and still appreciate the echoes from this book that help my daily struggle with freeing myself from the chains of life and existence. I highly recommend this work for anyone. The copy I read in prison was provided free, so purchasing this book is a tangible way to help rehabilitate others, too.
