Set in a hospital for crippled children, this novel explores one of the most difficult and troubling aspects of life-the meaning of pain and suffering. The adolescent hero, Tortuga or Turtle, takes his name from the oddly shaped mountain near the hospital and from the rigid cast that enclosed his body. In spite of incapacity, disfigurement, and neglect, Tortuga discovers the courage to transcent tragedy.
