The African American encyclopediaUser Review - Book Verdict
This extensive supplement to the six-volume African American Encyclopedia (LJ 9/1/93) includes 505 new articles, 71 of which are updates, written by leading scholars in the field. Entries range from a brief description of Al Cowlings's role in the O.J. Simpson phenomenon to a more detailed, thoughtful essay on "color consciousness" among African Americans. In general, the entries are well written, with controversial topics like melanin theory treated very evenhandedly (some might argue too uncritically). Unfortunately, most of the shorter entries are unsigned. By and large, an impressive work, especially recommended for libraries that already hold the original set.--Anthony O.
