About the author (1990)

Born in Lisbon, Migueis was part of the neo-realist movement and in many of his works shows the influence of Dostoevsky. Shortly after the publication of his first novel, "Pascoa Feliz" (Happy Easter) in 1932, Migueis went into exile, for many years living in Belgium and Brazil. When he returned years later, he published a number of novels, short stories, and an autobiographical narrative, "Um Homem sorri a morte com meia cara" (A Man Smiles at Death with Half a Face: An Autobiography of an Illness, 1959). Migueis died in 1980 while planning a trip to the United States.
