Frank Wedekind: four major playsUser Review - Book Verdict
Called "the prophet of sexuality in modern drama," German playwright Wedekind (1864-1918) earned his place as a pioneer of modern drama and the Theater of the Absurd with shocking plays that exposed the hypocrisy of turn-of-the-century German society's sexual mores. Spring's Awakening, first published in 1891, introduced expressionism to modern drama and was widely attacked for its sympathetic portrayal of adolescent sexual awakenings. The other plays in this anthology include Lulu, The Tenor, and The Marquis of Keith. Lulu's quest for sexual liberation leads to a particularly horrific ending; consequently, the authorities would not allow the play to be printed or produced during Wedekind's lifetime. Mueller (theater, UCLA) has translated Wedekind into contemporary English, effectively capturing the power and brilliance of the characterizations, dialog, and plot lines. Recommended for theater arts collections in academic and public libraries.DHoward E. Miller, St. Louis ...

Getting ready to see 'Lulu' at the Lyric on 11/30 Finished this translation today. This is the second time I have read this. I find the English very unidiomatic and difficult to follow. Perhaps this would work better in performance than on the page?
