Anne Frank, Beyond the Diary: A Photographic Remembrance

Front Cover
Viking, 1993 - History - 113 pages
Anne Frank lived a happy and normal family life, filled with the enthusiasms and hopes shared by many young women coming into adulthood. But the extraordinary times Anne live in and wrote of in her diary made her simple life extraordinary. Here, we see the human face behind this young writer's eloquent voice. Anne's life before her family went into hiding is revealed, as well as the influences that formed her strong moral beliefs. In over one hundred photographs, we see Anne's idyllic childhood, a time when she and her sister Margot were encouraged in all their endeavours and friendships - whether those friends were Jewish, Catholic, or Protestant. Historical essays and photographs provide background information on the worsening political situation, from which Anne was kept sheltered. Evidence of the wretched conditions that marked the last years of Anne's life, and testimony of the last people to see Anne and Margot alive in the Bergen-Besen concentration camp, reveal the tragedy that followed.
