LJ: "this is a poignant and compelling story that explores war's lingering and insidious impact on its survivors." #1 in the series. PWR: "a delightful mix of mystery, war story and romance set in WWI–era England, humble housemaid Maisie Dobbs climbs convincingly up Britain's social ladder, becoming in turn a university student, a wartime nurse and ultimately a private investigator." No red flags. 12/12/2007 Story alternates between present 1929 where Maisie is establishing herself as a private investigator (using her prodigious powers of deduction) and her teen years where she moves from being the daughter of a costermonger to household servant to university student to WWI battlefield nurse. Lots of detail, moves elegantly slowly.
