This book, edited and coordinated by Gabriela Vargas Cetina, presents several cases of organizations in Chiapas, Mexico. Taking seriously the notion, often advanced by scholars, that cooperatives took on many of the characteristics of the guilds, and that local organizations take on forms that combine global and already existing local patterns, the book presents an essay on guilds and sodalities in Colonial Chiapas, by Dolores Palomo Infante, to then move on to an analysis of coffee grower coops in historical perspective, by Ronald Nigh Nielsen, and then still on to an ethnography of weavers' cooperatives in Chiapas from a relational, ethnopolitical standpoint, by Gabriela Vargas Cetina. The introduction and conclusion were also written by Vargas Cetina. This book is clearly marked by New Institutional Economics theory, but also by the anthropology of globalization.
