This is my very first needlepoint book and one I still refer to today. I would reccomend this as a beginnning needlepoint book. The book has a great diagrams for how to stitch and diagrams showing several rows of the stitch. (Keep in mind this book was first published in 1973 when wool was the only thread used for needlepoint and 12 guage canvas was the norm.) Each stitch also suggests canvas size, needle size, amount of persainyarn to cover 1 square inch, and number of persian threads to use. The book also gives written instuctions for each stitch, some have historical information, and suggested uses. Chapter one is about basic materials used to stitch; Chapter 2 are the stitches; Chapter three is special techniques: two sizes of canvas used in same piece; shading; waste canvas; joining two pieces of canvas; cording, tassel and pompom making; Chapter four is finishing techniques.
