Esta obra narra una historia ficticia basada en un hecho real: Durante la campaña de Rusia de 1812, en un combate adverso para las tropas napoleónicas, un batallón de antiguos prisioneros españoles, enrolados a la fuerza en el ejército francés, intenta desertar pasándose al lado de los rusos. Napoleón y su alto mando contemplan desde una colina como, en lo más crudo de una batalla, un batallón se lanza desesperadamente contra las baterías enemigas. La emoción del emperador ante tal heroísmo se torna en estupor cuando es informado que el batallón está formado por esos soldados españoles. El Emperador ordena una carga de caballería para socorrer a esos héroes anónimos que llevan el estandarte del Imperio, desconociendo que en realidad está presenciando una deserción masiva. Con un tono desgarrado, divertido y trágico al mismo tiempo, el autor revela una descarnada y mordaz visión de la guerra y la condición humana.

As all Pérez Reverte's books I have read I like it. For one day you do not have nothing to do... it is small so it will not take you more than two hours to read it. It follows the style of this author. Read full review

About the author (1993)

Novelist and former journalist Arturo Pérez-Reverte Gutiérrez was born in Cartagena, Spain on November 25, 1951. He started his journalistic career writing for the Spanish newspaper Pueblo and later for Television Espanola - the Spanish state owned television, in the role of war correspondant. He worked as a war correspondent from 1973 to1994 before becoming a full-time writer. His first novel, El húsar, which was set in the Napoleonic Wars, was published in 1986, and he is well-known internationally for his popular Captain Alatriste fiction series, which takes place in 17th-century Europe. Pérez-Reverte has been elected to the Spanish Royal Academy.
