Heart of the community: the libraries we love: treasured libraries of the United States and CanadaUser Review - Book Verdict
Libraries are often considered the heart of their community, and, with this in mind, the editors of Berkshire Publishing, who are also the owners, had an idea. Claiming that no book had been written on the unique nature of America's public libraries, they enlisted the aid of other library professionals (including Leslie Burger, Nancy Kranich, Kathleen de la Pea McCook, Tom Phelps, Sally Reed, and others) to establish criteria for selecting via a nationwide competition nominated libraries to be included here. Unfortunately, these criteria are not delineated in the text for the reader, a major drawback. Of the nearly 300 nominations received from the United States and Canada, the 80 institutions chosen represent a wide diversity of public libraries. Arranged by zip code, each library is viewed on a two-page spread, with each profile including exterior and interior photographs along with unusual items representative of that particular library. Varying widely in content, the narratives include historical information, current issues, and qualities that make the library beloved of residents. In many instances, the inconsistency of these narratives makes it difficult to get a true picture of the library and leaves the reader wanting to know more. In addition, some institutions are represented with just one photo. It is not apparent in many of these spreads as to why the library is at the heart of the community nor will it be helpful in getting ideas for your own facility. A coffee-table book that is a marginal purchase.-Marie Bruni, Huntington Memorial Lib., Oneonta, NY
