though i haven't read all of this book, i did read the story about madame lalaurie, the infamous creole woman who tortured her slaves in new orleans. this version is so incorrect ... from her age being 10 years off, to the actual details of the gruesome discovery of her victims, which happened as a result of a fire, not a search based on another crime. since this information is so freely available on the basest of tourist sites (though her birthdate is commonly misreported) it can only lead to one conclusion - that this work was badly researched and not well enough loved to even have that be important ... the real story is so much better. (her birthdate is most often reported as being in 1775 whereas it was actually in 1787 - making her 14 when she first married - not uncommon in a male-heavy population at the time. hardly follows that she would have murdered her first husband. and her second marriage lasted a decade, again, hardly a quick kill.)
