The novel tells the story of a child arrived in the slums of New York in 1907, raised by immigrant Polish Jews. Through David's eyes, his father becomes suspicious of him. His warm-hearted mother is also isolated, by language. The boy scuttles through the streets like a frightened animal. Read full review
