MacDougall es de amena lectura, lo que no siempre se logra en textos cuya intención es ser empleados para centros de estudios superiores militares, como era el caso de esta obra. Entrega información completa y sencilla a la vez que las consideraciones tacticas y estratégicas de las campañas soberbias de Anibal, intentando ser imparcial y no inflexible en los juicios tanto de vencedores como de vencidos; puesto que las fuentes originales, son en demasía parciales, por ejemplo, señalando a los caratgineses como verdaderos "criminales" según constan en los textos romanos y a su vez consideran a sus consules o pretores derrotados como hombres ineptos para el arte de la guerra.
