"Nothing is more magical... As long as they roam the Earth, evil cannot harm the pure of heart." - from the movie Legendaccording to a prophecy, Ambrogino's birth will herald the destruction of the dark unicorns forever. in the magical land of Enespuro they call home, the pure unicorns are waiting excitedly for Ambrogino's arrival from the sacred land. the dark ones, under the leadership of the evil Thanis, intercept Ambrogino and his parents on their way home. when the pure ones hear the news, they muster their courage to save Ambrogino or it would be the end of them all.
Enespuro: Land of the Unicorns, published by Dorrance Publishing, brings to life a tale of these mythical beings. author Ali James has written a good-versus-evil story aimed at younger readers but adults can appreciate it too. there are beautiful and colorful illustrations throughout the book by artist Jack Shalatain that complement the story.
it was refreshing to read something that rekindled my childhood fascination for unicorns and their origins. although these legendary creatures are not found in Greek mythology, the author took the liberty of including Zeus and Pegasus in the plot.
i noticed, though, that there were too many characters. i had a little difficulty keeping track and trying to recall the names of some minor ones. it was probably complicated by the fact that these personages had their own stories to tell apart from Ambrogino's. it was only in the latter part of the book that things made sense. i wonder if younger readers would be able to discern the identities and relationships better without getting confused.
i also have another concern. it appears that the "pure ones" are not entirely pure at all. they are not immune to the wiles and temptations of the dark ones. some have even cavorted with the enemy. it seems that in Enespuro, there are not only black and white areas but gray ones as well.
still, spending time with the unicorns was worth my time. it would be great, however, if an extra page or two would show a list of the names of all the characters with some notes to guide the reader.
