I absolutely and unashamedly love this book. His work crops up in most of the 'trendy' newer language books (Bill Bryson, Melvyn Bragg etc.) Proper quality language work, and surprisingly readable considering its age. Read full review

As this book is now over 50 years old, I am sure there have been some breakthroughs in linguistics surrounding the english language. However, I found this book fascinating as a novice of the origins of the English language. The writing is vibrant and it is quite a page turner of interesting facts.
