The Piano Music of Debussy and Ravel: A Comparative Study of Their Conservatoire Experiences as Pianist-composers, Musical Philosophies, Influences Pertaining to Their Piano Works, and Individual Pianistic Styles
ProQuest, 2007 - 56 pages
The purpose of this study is to explore the similarities and differences in the piano music of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel, looking specifically at their Conservatoire experiences as pianist-composers, sources of inspiration, and ideas on music and composition. While they shared similar backgrounds and paths of study in terms of education, artistic sympathies, and outside influences, their music is fundamentally different. Both rejected conformity and expanded the possibilities of tonality and keyboard technique in their own way, and both became two of the most unique and influential French composers of the early twentieth century.
