Men are viewed rather like large children, who need to be fed large quantities of meat and have their feelings soothed. If this book had been written in 1973 instead of 1953 it might have been more sympathetic to the loss Jane's intellectual live, the restrictions the villages expectation of her as the vicar's wife put on her personal development. Yet while Jane is slightly put out by her lack of social skills she is not intensely unhapyy.
