Review: The Bullpen Gospels: A Non-Prospect's Pursuit of the Major Leagues and the Meaning of Life

User Review  - Chris - Goodreads

Couldn't get enough of this book. Literally stopped reading it with 40 pages to go so as not to finish. Mostly hilarious with touching moments along the way. Laughed out loud every other page. Dirk Hayhurst is a very good writer and seems like quite a solid person. Read full review

3.5 stars This is a very entertaining read, but too many of the stories in the book are about players' shenanigans off the field. They're hilarious at first, but it soon becomes "this one time, at band camp..." That said, Hayhurst is a good writer and the non-shenanigan bits are top notch. Read full review

Tales of the people and madness of the minor leagues, mixed with the author trying to figure out who the Hell he is, make for one of the best sports books I've read in a long time. Read full review

Badly marketed, badly proofread, badly titled, and intermittently badly written. I got the same vibe from it that I got from some of the addiction memoirs I've read: until the very end of the book ... Read full review

Three and a half stars. Hayhurst has a nice way of combining Profound Thoughts with funny scenes of minor league life. I usually wonder how much of the content of these books is really true, and how ... Read full review

This book may be the best book about baseball ever, but it is more than that. Hayhurst brings the reader into his pursuit to make it in baseball, escape a dysfunctional family, and to overcome self ... Read full review

Review: The Bullpen Gospels: A Non-Prospect's Pursuit of the Major Leagues and the Meaning of Life

Absolutely the best baseball book I've ever read. Hayhurst tells not so much about actually playing baseball as he describes the lifestyle that inevitably accompanies minor league players - for better or worse. Can't wait to read his next book. Read full review
