The book features expanded discussion of parallel, distributed and real-time systems. It now includes a tutorial appendix based on the NACHOS operating system, new material on atomicity and expanded coverage of protection and security. All the hardware issues in this edition are covered in one chapter for ease of understanding. Common operating systems (MS-DOS, OS/2, Macintosh, SunOS 5) are used throughout the book to illustrate concepts and to provide examples of performance characteristics. The coverage of UNIX and the Mach operating system has also been expanded. All the chapters include a summary and exercises.
