Within the mystical and contemplative tradition, the writings of a number of major figures from England have fascinated generations of readers. The Way of the English Mystics presents seven of them, along with key extracts from their writings and maps and drawings of the sites associated with them. Five are from the medieval period or golden age of mysticism : Richard Rolle, Walter Hilton, Julian of Norwich, Margery Kempe and the anonymous author of The Cloud of Unknowing. Two come from later centuries : William Law and the beloved Anglican poet, George Herbert.
