Philadelphia: A 300 Year History
Russell Frank Weigley, Nicholas B. Wainwright, Edwin Wolf
W. W. Norton & Company, 1982 - History - 842 pages
In this book, the first comprehensive history of Philadelphia to be written in nearly three-quarters of a century, the reader will discover a rich and colorful portrait of one of America's most vital, interesting, and illustrious cities. Philadelphia: A 300-Year History traces the political, artistic, physical, and social evolution of the city and illumines its very special spirit---how it has changed in response to the demands of three centuries, and how, in many fascinating respects, it has remained the same as it was in William Penn's day.

The history of Philadelphia is presented over 750 pages, sometimes in more detail than desired but thoroughly. An attempt is made to present its many facets including economic, social, cultural, and political. The book was compiled in 1982 so obviously does not address the past thirty years. As a new resident of Philadelphia, it provided a good picture of the city through the centuries.

Different sections have very different styles and some are more compelling than others. I am finding this a great background read for prepping a Philadelphia History course.
