Douglas Young is a young surveyor who stumbles across rambling Underwood House, near Edinburgh, one day whilst walking his dog. He realizes its potential immediately and manages to find investors to buy in with him and develop the property into flats. He keeps one for himself and becomes the anointed leader of the development's residents. So, when one of the neighbours is found dead one evening, Douglas and his young assistant Tash, become irrevocably involved in the police investigation. Detective Chief Inspector 'Sandy' Laird is in charge - in the absence of his wife, the notorious Superintendent 'Honeypot' Laird - and the investigation proceeds slowly, particularly when the victim's brother disappears. However, on a routine inspection of the deceased's flat, the plot thickens when several items are uncovered which imply that the victim had a more than unhealthy voyeuristic hobby . . .
