Multicultural Teaching: A Handbook of Activities, Information, and ResourcesMany people think of "multiculturalism" as a term which exists to include a very specific group of previously underrepresented people. What they don't always realize is that every individual is diverse, and every person contributes to our multicultural society in some way. This book's focus reminds readers to keep their own personal diversity in mind so that they may better understand, appreciate, and respect the diversity in others. The authors take the broadest definition of multiculturalism to include ethnicity, gender, race, age, social class, and language. Many different "kinds" of diversity are explored, including less obvious examples, such as diversity in family arrangements, conflict resolution strategies, and family naming customs. The assumptions underlying the book are that multicultural understandings are fundamental to the education of all children, that all of education is inherently multicultural, and that multicultural education is basic and essential for all people.
