As a direct descendant of Swimmer I found this book fasinating. It was like sitting around the fireplace of an evening with my grandparents again. The stories and anecodotes are told the same way I remember hearing them when I was a child. The sytax tells me that these stories were told by a Cherokee speaker because someone who learned Cherokee as a first language does not speak or translate into English the Cherokee the same way as one who has learned English first. Yes there are suble differences in some of the formulas but these are there to protect the reader not misinformation. It is done for the same reason a Dr uses medical shorthand to write notes and prescriptions so that only another in the same field can read what is being written.
This book is highly inaccurate and has been criticized throughout Cherokee Communities since we became aware of it shortly after it was published many many years ago. Mooney was widely disliked by traditional Cherokees who had little interest in sharing our stories with him so he went to children in many cases and attempted to bribe them with candy and trinkets. The stories he got, in many cases were simply a rehashing of aesop's fables. Other stories were simply made up by himself and others.
Unfortunately as the years have gone by due to acculturation, many Cherokee's have accepted this book as Gospel and have begun to incorporate its stories and cultural observations as fact.
