Swimming and Diving
Swimming is one of the oldest and most popular sports in the world. Did you know that the Greek and Roman soldiers swam to keep in shape
? Today there are many swimmers who train for the Olympics. One former competition swimmer named Amy Van Dyken finished in fourth place in her first Olympic Final, but she kept striving to show everyone she could succeed. During the week of the Olympics she won 4 gold medals and 1 silver medal! Today swimming meets take place in specialty pools. In order for swimmers to glide quickly and smoothly through the water they need a bathing suit made from special fabrics. There are several races of different distances such as the 100-meter breaststroke, the 400-meter freestyle and the 200-meter breaststroke. Diving is one of the most exciting and dangerous sports. Skillful divers always need to make sure their hands and feet enter the water first. If divers make a very small splash, it’s called a “clean entry.” Greg Louganis is known as one of the greatest divers in the history of the the sport. He competed in three Olympics in 1978, 1984, and 1988. How do you think Amy Van Dyken felt about winning her 4 gold medals and 1 silver medal? Why do you think Greg Louganis tried to make it to the Olympics three times? This book Swimming and Diving by Christin Ditchfield taught me to put all my potential and effort into achieving my goals. This is Jayden from the Fast and the Furious.
