I still have the 1992 edition of this wonderful book, and have found the information profoundly useful over the years. The climate, soils and plant hardiness maps are of great assistance: the plant which will look spectacular in a Kloof garden with its beautifully rich, friable soil suddenly wilts in a most Victorian fashion when transplanted into sandy Durban! The book is beautifully illustrated, and contains a wealth of botanical and gardening knowledge. Together with the late Prof. Kristo Pienaar, Keith Kirsten must be one of the most experienced and enthusiastic gardening experts in South Africa.

I loved the use of symbols in this book - it makes it so easy to find the appropriate plants according to their position and climate. Also the photographs throughout make plant identification simple! Keith Kirsten is a real master of helping out lay people create great gardens.
