This book consists of eight chapters. Three chapters basically describe that the dependency is the only theory that lead to the development especially in the Third World countries (Latin America, Caribbean Countries). Although in this book some other theories are also arguing against the dependence theory that is Marxist theory, New Marxist, world system theory, interdisciplinary, case study to the self-reliance theories are necessary for development.
Development Theory in Transition:
The first chapter basically deals with the evaluation growth of modern development theory from the date back the Second World War until to 1960’s. in that era economic so development were considered to the synonymous which was the capital formation & free trade were the key factor to the dependency & development theory.
But after that the new dimension were added to the contribution of development that work from the sociologist, scientist that contribution the change of paradigm. During those days most scholar saw that the development was an evolutionary process in which the concept of under development were defined in term of observable differences between rich & poor countries but the true meaning of development was to bridge these gaps by means of imitative process in which the less developed countries gradually assumed the qualities of industrialized nation. The analysis of the qualities which were imitated was shared by economist, sociologist, and political scientists in the shape, structural theories, human attitudes and social institutors towards the development. This chapter basically the overview of dependence theory related to development which started in Third World primarily in Latin America and the Caribbean countries.
The dependency approach originated in extensive Latin America due to the problems of under development which was the most important contribution to modern social sciences. In this chapter related to the dependency theory that the first conflict between classical and Marxism and New Marxism. Because Marxism sees as imperialism in a centric perspective that is the stage of development of capitalism not of the development in the related countries. While Neo Marxism sees imperialism from the Periphery’s or the victim which in turn apply that the interrex has shifted from development to under development.
During the 1950’s and the 1960’s a less tradition bound Marxist school was created but at the same time different revolutionary practice developed in Latin America. Take place depend to a large extent degree and flexibility of the institutional frame work with which the economy can expand.
If, analysis structure framework from different scholar that there are some features are so commons to the majority of the scholars related to the dependency school of thought.
1- Under development is intimately connected with the expansion of industrialized capital development and underdevelopment are different aspects of the same universal process.
2- Under development can, not considered as the original condition in an evolutionary process.
3- Development is however not only an external phenomena but it is also a manifested in different ways in the internal social, ideological and Political structure.
The “ECLA” and the early Latin America debate on development that we argue that the comparative strong Latin America tradition of the social sciences is one important reason that why an independent theory developed is this region. In this context the ECLA plays a key role towards the Development in the Latin American countries that effect the growth of dependency theory in Latin America.
The Latin American Dependency School:
The third chapter deals with the Latin America dependency school. In this chapter different school of thoughts analyzing these views about a dependency school towards Latin America and described a chronological development.
