Getting the Buggers to Behave
"This book gives you advice on behaviour management that is easily accessible and equally easy to apply. After all, how many of us, snowed under with reports to write and lessons to plan, have time to wade through endless theory? This book provides plenty of information on the basic of behaviour management, lots of tips for controlling your classes, and ideas for managing the physical aspects of the classroom environment. The ideas and advice given are based on common sense observations and strategies that have worked for me. I hope you find this book a useful reference source for your everyday teaching, one that you can turn to for ideas when you need them or to find alternative strategies for dealing with the management of your own class or classes " Sue Cowley
Contains two new chapters on managing confrontation and the effective teacher.

Getting the buggers to behave is a kind of down-to-earth advice book for behaviour management. I have to admit I don't feel it's helped me practice much. I think this is predominantly because it's 'down to earth good advice' is predominantly stuff anyone with a little knowledge about human behaviour can work out for themselves. Thinks like being consistent with rewards and punishments. It's stressed so much in this book and I kind of knew that. What I could have really used was a list of strategies, how to implement them and their strong and weak points. Like a list of ways to get the classes attention. She relied very strongly on case studies and avoided making any generalisations beyond her general behaviour tips which were, as said above, easy to work out on my own. It's an ok general book, and would probably make someone who hadn't started teaching paractice yet and wanted reasuring feel better. I was looking for specific strategies to deal with a problem class and concerete things I could do to improve my paractice, not platitides and easily worked out 'good sense' advice.

so far very useful and written in an enjoyable and engaging way. I can relate to a lot of this and it certainly made me think about situations I had been in as a TA, Now Finished and proved very useful already
