Oh my goodness! The criticism regarding the historical context of this book is unreal. Yes...it was written in the 1970s - obviously something to take into account, which means, like most literature (no matter what genre) it needs to be adapted to meet the needs of the reader and / or time period. I read the book to train my first daughter, and then I adapted it to meet her needs. There were some things I did not think were necessary (i.e. having the child practice so intensely after an accident) and there were other things that needed to be added in (i.e. hand washing). Other procedures the book outlines depend upon the development of the child. Overall, I took the most basic methods from this book (modelling, the use of the question "Are your underwear clean and dry?" and others) . . . within just a few days, I would say my daughter was fully potty trained when it came to urinating. I had to develop my own reward methods when it came to bowel movements. Furthermore, I work full-time and did this over a three-day weekend. I simply informed my daycare provider about what was going on, and she helped to keep things going in a positive manner. Sure, the book may not have paid attention to working moms, but that doesn't mean us working moms can't work with the book to make things happen.
