(Book). DownBeat magazine (est. 1939), the bible of "jazz, blues, and beyond," proudly launches the first book in its DownBeat Hall of Fame Series. DownBeat has documented Miles Davis's career like no other journal in the world. From Davis's first DownBeat interview in 1950 to his death in 1991, the magazine captured each nuance and phase of his career through cover stories, features, news items, and reviews. This book is a long-overdue compilation of everything DownBeat magazine has written about Miles Davis, a book packed with glimpses into the artist's career as it happened from the polite young trumpeter making a name for himself, to the bombastic innovator, to the near mythic legend. It's a must-read for anyone interested in perhaps the most enigmatic and enduring star in jazz history.

About the author (2007)

Ed Enright is the editor of DownBeat magazine.

Barry Irwin is a lawyer who, for the last twenty years, has primarily practiced in the area of intellectual property litigation. He has first-chaired many high-stakes patent, copyright, trademark, trade secret, restrictive covenant, unfair competition and antitrust matters. He has served as a member of Lawyers for the Creative Art's Board since 2010. In 2010, LCA awarded Barry's law firm, Kirkland & Ellis LLP, its Law Firm of the Year Award. Barry's pro bono efforts were highlighted as a major reason for the award, which Barry accepted on behalf of Kirkland. Barry has been legal counsel to numerous bands and musicians, addressing music law related issues ranging from drafting partnership agreements, preparing copyright filings, negotiating recording contracts, litigating termination of recording contracts, and winding up band assets upon dissolution. Barry's copyright practice has also involved a diverse range of media, including books, music, software, and lawn statuary. Barry received his B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Notre Dame in 1988. He received his J.D. from the University of Notre Dame Law School, magna cum laude in 1992. Barry is also an Adjunct Professor at Notre Dame Law School, where he teaches Patent Litigation and Entertainment Law. Jason Koransky is an associate in the intellectual property litigation group at Kirkland & Ellis LLP, where his practice focuses on copyright, trademark, and false advertising law. Prior to becoming an attorney, Jason (an amateur trumpeter) worked as a journalist in the Chicago area, and was immersed in the music industry for more than a decade as the editor of the jazz and blues magazine DownBeat. Jason received his B.S. in journalism from Northwestern University in 1996 and his J.D. from the John Marshall Law School in 2010.
