The first work of its kind, this volume celebrates ethnic costume not as mere fashion statement, but as a proud demonstration and manifestation of a group's cultural identity and dignity. Kennett explains the background of the clothing and how and why certain garments came into being. A study of the design and construction of the garment follows. 500 color photos. 25 maps.

For a book about ethnic dress, it has a surprising amount of babywearing photos hidden in it. It seemed that there were quite a few varieties found worldwide, except for Europe and maybe Oceania. As for the rest, it is a good book for a brief tour worldwide, but not great for in depth. Read full review
