If you are interested in Vermont, this book is a must. Congdon covered the entire state, and profiled (with description and photo) almost every impressive and important old house. Old in Vermont means from about 1785 through the Greek Revival houses into the 1840's..and then a discussion of the Victorians and more modern types. Since VT was the 14th state, and was always a "backwater" compared to the rest of New England (and still is) the houses are fascinating. Many were constructed and decorated by carpenters and bricklayers who were not sophisticated, but knew how to imitate the more elaborate and refined designs then common in the more populated parts of New England. "Country Federal" and other imitative styles are clearly shown and described. The book is absolutely delightful to read, and once you read it, you will be an expert on colonial styles. You can also get in your car and drive by almost all the houses shown and discussed. Like so many other things in Vermont, many of the old houses there are intact and unspoiled. Some are glamorosly restored today, of course. But most are simply well taken care of, and best of all--still there, thanks to Vermont's still small population.
