On Architecture: Short Essays
After practicing architecture for more than fifty years and making a substantial contribution to European architecture, author and architect Alexandros N. Tombazis presents his thoughts and advice for the benefit of young architects. In this little book, each 'thought' is presented in the form of a short essay that captures his lifelong involvement with, and love for, architecture and painting. The book addresses subjects including the importance of place; designing with - not against - the climate; the impact of architecture on people's lives; balance and proportion; the use of shading; the role of competitions in developing one's career and the virtues of patience, listening and teamwork. The thoughts' are accompanied by an eclectic mix of photos and sketches, most by Tombazis. In his role as elder statesman, he encourages the young architect to feel, hear, smell and taste the hidden dimensions of architecture. His love affair with architecture is contagious; his wisdom is kindly without being patronising, eye-opening without being obvious.
