The Fur Hat
An insecure, self-deprecating writer is called before the Soviet Writer's Union and awarded a fine hat of rabbit fur. The writer is delighted but later finds out there is an entire hierarchy of hats sported by the literary establishment and rabbit fur ranks at the very bottom.

While this book wasn't the worst of the Soviet novels I've read, it still fit into that very archetypal form they all seem to have. A lot of the characters run together and seem to represent ideas rather than forming multi-dimensional characters. Read full review
