Thunder Heights

Center Point Large Print, Mar 1, 2012 - Fiction - 397 pages

To Camilla King, her trip up the Hudson to the huge Gothic mansion named Thunder Heights was a return to the home that had never been hers. From there her grandfather, financier Orrin Judd, ran his vast empire. When Camilla had been a child her mother had returned for a visit and mysteriously died. From that point on, Camilla's father cut himself off from the Judd family.

Camilla has been making her way as a governess since her father died, so the summons from her grandfather had come as a surprise, but Camilla obeyed it -- partly out of curiosity, and partly out of hope. What she found at Thundering Heights was a sick old man anxious to make his peace with her before he died. She also met imperious Aunt Hortense and fey, ghostlike Aunt Letty, haunted by some strange guilt or sorrow. Hortense's adopted son, Booth, was a sardonic young man who seemed content to idle his time away, and Ross Granger, who had been hired as an aide to her grandfather, treated Camilla with the most rigid formality.

Over the enormous house hung an atmosphere of gloom, impending danger, and strange crosscurrents. And in this atmosphere, Phyllis A. Whitney weaves a tense and moving story of intrigue and shadowy terror.
