In subtly lush paintings that charm viewers equally through their application of paint and their quirky iconography, Laura Owens touches on expressive abstraction, color field painting, and the occasional decorative glimpse of a monkey. Charged as one of the contemporary artists responsible for a revival of the painting, Owens has developed an enigmatic style all her own, moving from landscape to abstraction with energetic thick brush strokes, fanciful childlike doodles, or sophisticated fine-line drawings, culling her influences from any number of visual sources, including chinese landscape painting, japanese wood block prints, and patterned textiles. This volume includes new paintings created for her upcoming solo show at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

About the author (2003)

Laura Owens was born in Ohio in 1970 and studied at RISD, Skowhegan, and Cal Arts, where she finished her MFA in 1994. Her work has appeared at venues including ACME in Los Angeles and Gavin Brown's Enterprise and the Whitney Biennial in New York, and has been covered by "Artforum, " the "New Yorker" and the "New York Times." In 2001 Owens had her first solo museum exhibition at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. She has since exhibited at the Museums of Contemporary Art in North Miami and Los Angeles, the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia, the Aspen Art Museum and the Milwaukee Art Museum. Her work is represented in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Thomas Lawson has shown paintings at MetroPictures, New York and the Richard Kuhlenschmidt and Rosamund Felsen galleries in Los Angeles, as well as in many public institutions around the world. His essays have appeared in Artforum, Art in America, frieze and October. He has organized exhibitions for such venues as Artists Space, P.S. 1 and White Columns in New York, and the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery. Since 1991, he has been Dean of Cal Arts. Since 2002, he has been Co-Editor of the influential journal, Afterall, and his selected writings were recently published by JRP/Ringier.
