This is an amazing story. It will require the reader to set aside personal prejudice; modern (circa 2011) conservative readers will find the author's point of view a trifle annoying in places with it being clearly sympathetic to the Zulu nation, very critical of the British government, and decidedly anti-war. All of which are justifiable, to some extent in this case.
If you believe this event something that happened a long time ago, in a place far far away, you would be mistaken. This is a story long repeated in human history; only the names, dates, and places change. Even recent events follow this pattern.
