i read this book as a kid in grade school in the 60s, remembered the title and looked it up 40 plus years later and found it. wow. i liked it then though i confess i didn't understand returning bags for a penny? we returned empty bottles for a nickel. i grew up in LA but the book obviously made an impression on me for i never forgot it. now i'm going to look up other books i recall from my childhood.
