THE BIG RICH: The Rise and Fall of the Greatest Texas Oil Fortunes

Editorial Review - Kirkus - Jane Doe

An "epitaph," as Texas expat and Vanity Fair special correspondent Burrough (Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 2004, etc.) calls it, for a storied, moneyed time that defines the Lone Star State's self-image.No matter how the fortune was made, the pattern is the same: The first hardscrabble generation fights, thieves and kills to get rich; the second becomes ... As a native Texan, I found this book to be a fascinating read. It provides a vivid description of characters that both make up the history and lore of Texas. Although I'm not sure the author intended it this way, I came away with a stronger affection for the state. I know these men were imperfect in many ways, but the book paints an irresistable picture of persons who did extraordinary things - things that are unique to not only Texas, but to America. I recommend the book to anyone who has Texas blood throwing flowing through their veins, has ever lived in, or has any interest in, the state. It's a one-of-a-kind story, to be sure.

This book contains aa lot of interesting (and at times outrageous) history, and it was a good introduction to Texas, since my wife and I recently moved here. But I was put off a bit by the obvious animosity that the author had for his subjects. Read full review

Entertaining look at recent Texas history, under the influence of oil money. Enjoyed reading about so many people and places that I heard of growing up in South Texas but lacked context to appreciate. Read full review

A wonderful cast of characters that could only be real. They are too bizarre to be fictional and could only be Texans. I always keep wondering why Texans have such a need to be "big" and "bragging ... Read full review

Got this book as a gift from my in-laws. Couldn't put it down! Fascinating story that follows four Texas oil families from early days on through to (most of) their demise. Highly recommend! Read full review
